change of opinion
12:04am 01/08/2008
So for years, I have bashed Jay Leno. Saying he only appeals to those under 12 or over 65. But the last couple weeks, he's actually been pretty funny. Inspiring me to laugh every now and then.

Maybe it's because he's on his way out so he's not holding back [in which of his writers' jokes he chooses to use]? Maybe. He's still no Conan.

Though, there was a recent poll in the DC newspaper asking people if they thought Conan would do as good of a job as Leno as host of the tonight show, and HALF of the people said no. what?

warm weather
10:46pm 01/04/2008
So today, in the District, it was over 70 degrees. Pretty nice day. On my walk home from work, I saw a lot of people jogging and a lot of people walking dogs. The increase in joggers makes sense, the warm weather gives people motivation to get out and exercise. But this increase in dog walking... where are these dogs in the winter? Not getting walks? Don't these people realize dogs need and want exercise all the time, not just when it's convenient for the owners? Jerks!

staring problem
09:28pm 20/03/2008
why do people always look at me? when i'm in a public place, minding my own business, i often notice people looking at me. yes, i can hear you say "well if you can see them looking at you, then you're just as guilty." but if i notice this when i just scan and people watch. it always makes me feel like i have a booger hanging out of my nose. they're probably staring at my huge nose. get over it general public, i have a big nose!

also, i almost pooped my pants today when i came home and saw one of my plants had, out of nowhere, drooped like a microwaved piece of pizza. it looked fine this morning, and then bam, flopstick. i think it just needed some water. we'll see.

if i was irish, i think i'd be pretty pissed at all the leprechaun jokes on st. patrick's day.

unless i went to notre dame, then i'd just deserve it.

but also, why don't other nationalities have their own mythical figures associated with them?

One thing I hate about the internet (or sometimes just advertising): when companies don't advertise prices. There's the whole "if you have to ask, you can't afford it" but that's not always true, especially not while browsing/window shopping.

I was looking at an apartment building's website, and they will put in square footage, layout, amenities, things available in the neighborhood, etc, but won't tell me what rent is. Not even a high and low bound. Screw you apartment place, I just want to know how much your rooms are.

as a traffic/transportation engineer, i want to do a study where i study pedestrian flows in bars. why do the paths that get cut through the sea of people happen the way they do? how do they shift? what can i learn about human nature and the essence of movement by seeing how people without inhibitions move through a group of people they are not familiar with? Someone help me write a research grant.

totally called it
09:49pm 20/02/2008
I think I may be psychic. my boss called a staff meeting today and told us he put in his resignation yesterday. i totally knew he was going to quit soon. he had been acting flustered this week and i knew something was up.

anyway, he was a pretty awesome boss. really nice, understanding, fun loving, not-a-disphit, etc. while my job itself is so-so, i always thought i had a good deal going because my boss never acted like a boss.

but now he's leaving. i'm curious to see how things are going to shake up, because there's a lot of tension at work w/ the various level of bosses and people being forced to relocate to work on a $500million project proposal. I think it'd be funny if everyone quit.

Also, I realized the reason i was never a big salad person was because i was so headstrong on only using ranch. ranch is good, but i'm going to branch out. and try to eat salads twice a week. dating someone who is aware of healthy eating habits inspires you to eat better.

quitting a job
12:35am 19/02/2008
I'm not planning on quitting my job right now, but if I had to, this is how i'd do it:

(1) Dye my hair some ridiculous color
(2) shave the company logo into my head

I'm sure outrageous hairstyles are unacceptable by any corporate company policy. But imagine the conundrum a manager would be in to fire someone w/ such dedication for the company that they would display the logo on their head.

Thanksgiving in the city
09:20pm 22/11/2007
So this mark two firsts for me. It was the first major holiday I have spent alone and without my family. Second, it marks the first time I've been to a regular sit down restaurant by myself.

It was definitely really weird. I'm not one to get overly emotional about things like this, but it was kind of sad to not be around family on Thanksgiving. I guess the reason for the holiday is to give thanks, and I've probably never been more thankful for my family than today -- when I wasn't able to see them.

However, the most depressing part of this Thanksgiving wasn't the Lions loss, wasn't going to the National Portrait Gallery by myself, wasn't eat at Chinatown Express for my Thanksgiving dinner, wasn't realizing I should have got the noodles because they are made "on the spot". Instead, it was seeing a father and his young son sitting down to their Thanksgiving dinner at the window table of the Ruby Tuesdays in Chinatown. That's not what the holiday is all about. I guess it was nice that they got to be together.

Happy Thanksgiving. Don't take it for granted.

So it's been forever since I posted on this contraption. Trying to finish a Master's thesis, then riding a bike from Texas to Alaska, then not having a working computer will often lead to the lack of ability to do things such as post to LJ. I figured when I checked it again, everyone will have stopped using it, but to my surprise, i saw at least a couple posts recently. Crazy.

My day today was spent going to my nonna's, calling an ambulance, then waiting with her in the emergency room. She's had dizzy spells for quite some time, and that's what she was having today. I've never actually seen it, but it's pretty frightening to see your grandmother not be able to sit up because when she does she gets so dizzy that she becomes nauseous and dry heaves. They couldn't find anything wrong with her, so as long as she's OK, she'll be out tomorrow. It's scary, but I'm sure she'll be OK. I just know when I get older, if I ever end up in the hospital more than once in a year, I'm just calling it quits and retiring to a cabin in the woods where I can die in peace and not have my family see me go. Seriously.

Also, got a call from a company (CH2M Hill) in Chicago about a job, and I've got a phone interview tomorrow with a company (STV Inc.) in Boston. Makes me feel a little better about turning down the offer in NYC for now (sorry Nate!).

What has happened to me in the past several months:
I still am in grad school.
I'm going to graduate in August technically, but that means nothing more than turning my thesis in later than I should be.
I don't have a job lined up yet.
I saw Little Richard perform at UT. It was a surreal experience. That man is senile. He kept telling people to "shutup!" and he mentioned for about 3 minutes how it was hard being him and that he'd never go back to Indiana (I think he thought he was in Indiana).

That's about it.

I bought quite possibly my final Austin-Detroit round trip ticket. I'll be home May 9th - 15th. I'm going to try and spend a lot of time with my family, but I also want to spend plenty of time w/ my friends too, so be on the look out.

Until I think of something more interesting to write about in LJ... take care, folks.

So we all know Carlos Mencia sucks, right? I was looking him up on wikipedia the other day to find out his heritage (because I heard he wasn't 100% Mexican). He's mexican and honduras-an(?).

Anyway, there was a link to Maxim's list of the top 12 worst comedians. http://www.maximonline.com/slideshows/index.aspx?slideId=2090&imgCollectId=98

He made the list, though unfortunately all the way at #12.

The rest of the list:
11. Christopher Titus (agree)
10. Judy Tenuta (never heard of her)
9. Kathy Griffin (obviously)
8. Gallagher ( :( )
7. Paula Poundstone (I'll stop w/ the commentary now)
6. Sandra Bernhard
5. Louie Anderson
4. Yakov Smirnoff (i've never actually heard him, but the fact they referenced him in Family Guy makes him OK w/ me)
3. Whoopi Goldberg
2. Margaret Cho
1. Sinbad

You'll notice six on that list are females. Goes along w/ my idea that girls are not funny. Especially Margaret Cho.

If anyone is interested, I'm doing some Superbowl football squares. Half of the money will go to my charity bike ride. The other half goes to the winners, obviously.

Squares are $5 a piece. Payout is $62.50 per quarter. With one square, you have a chance at winning in each of the four quarters. Numbers are assigned randomly, so it's basically a raffle.

If you want to buy one, two, three or 10 squares, let me know. Preferably within the next day or two before the rest get filled up.

So last wednesday, a friend of mine who is from Philadelphia asks me and some others if we wanted to drive to New Orleans for the Philly/New Orleans football game.

Next thing I know, we spend Friday driving across Texas and Louisiana and four of us are eating gumbo and headed to Bourbon Street. While it's too expensive to do often, and it's almost impossible to find that kind of time, there's nothing cooler than taking a relatively spontaneous road trip to a place you've never been.

Bourbon Street was much like 6th street in Austin, but more narrow, longer and much, much dirtier. It was cool though. The streets of the French Quarter reminded me a lot of Paris, but with shorter buildings and using cheaper building supplies. It was pretty cool. We ate at the Gumbo Shop and it was freaking delicious.

We spent Saturday just walking around, and eventually walked around the outside of the Superdome (which looks pretty sweet for a stadium) and trying to find a Philadelphia Eagles friendly tailgate. Stumbled upon a group of New Orleans police officers tailgating under an I-10 overpass. They gave my friend shit, but welcomed us in and fed us and gave us beer and briefly tried to teach us honkeys how to dance. They have a freaking DJ at their tailgate, it was bad ass. Went back to Bourbon St., watched the game, and drove back through the night.

It was a good time. New Orleans is a pretty neat place, though we only saw about 10 blocks of it.

In two days, the potentially final semester of my illustrious school career will begin. Pretty intimidating. I need to start looking for a job. Maybe.

So on Wednesday, in overtime, my roller hockey team won our league championship. yes, it's an in-house league. yes, we play in the C-league (though there's only a B and a C). but it was still pretty awesome. we got little plastic trophies.

i went on a 32 mile bike ride today. unfortunately about 13 miles in, i got a flat tire, and considering i'm so smart, i didn't have a spare tube. that sucked.

I ran 3.5 miles yesterday, and 3.9 today. both in about 30 minutes. Do i expect any of you to care? of course not, but i just want to keep a record for myself.

For the record though, i'm the sweatiest person alive.

I'll be in Michigan December 18th until January 3rd, with a potential trip to Chicago on December 21-22. Mark your calendars, bitches; you know you want to hang out with me for at least five and up to 30 minutes.

this past weekend was pretty good. I saw pretty much every single person that I know of in my family except for 3 or 4 (granted, with my small family, that's still a high percentage), so that was cool. Everyone was interested about my bike ride, so that was good (ps: tell your parents or yourself to donate. do it now!)

The 5 year Fitzgerald Reunion. I must say, i was slightly "disappointed" in the turnout. Not that there was a lot of people who didn't show up that I wanted to talk to, but I just wanted to see more people. Maybe it's because I'm an asshole and wanted to make fun of them. But it wouldn't be in an arrogant "I'm getting a master's degree and you're not" kind of way. It'd be more "you have gold teeth and still go to all the high school basketball games" kind of way. The people I did see I was happy to; can't wait for the 10 year!

As a result of the reunion, I looked back at my senior yearbook. I was the "editor-in-chief"; however, that basically amounted to layout editor. Five years later, I'm pretty satisfied with how it looks, though I was severly troubled at the number of fonts I used. I'm pretty sure I used over a dozen fonts; pretty much all the ones that were compatible with our publisher. That's such bad style. geesh.
